Darlene was convicted in Pope County, Arkansas Circuit Court for First Degree Murder in 1992 in the death of Pamela Smith. She has served 31 years on good behavior.
In addition to Ms. Evans, three family members were charged in the crime. Despite Darlene’s stepbrother David Malick, having confessed to killing Mrs. Smith by himself, Ms. Evans was later convicted by unsubstantiated testimony and no physical evidence.
During her incarceration Darlene has been active in the Chaplaincy Program and Prison Industry Program; where she worked for minimum wage and a portion of each paycheck was paid into the Victims Fund. She currently in the Medical Department helping other incarcerated individuals who are sick and uses her spare time to crochet for her daughter and friends and family.
